Gender Identity disorders in children and adolescents are uncommon and complex conditions. They are often associated with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Intense distress is often experienced, particularly in adolescence. This report, the first of its kind, offers guidance in the management and therapeutic interventions with these children and adolescents and their families. It describes the role of psychological, social and physical interventions and outlines the function of specialist teams. It recommends an integrated multi-disciplinary approach in the assessment and management of these children and adolescents.
The report was prepared in consultation with an international group of clinicians and researchers with a special interest in gender identity development and disorders, following an international conference in London. It is hoped it will contribute to good practice in services in this country and abroad.
