I think it's hilarious when someone tells me that the reason many other intersex people don't like transsexuals using the word intersex to describe themselves is because they don't want to be thought of as transsexuals. Neither do I!
If 'transsexual' meant something fairly benign such as "person whose initial sexual development reversed when it got to the last stage of psychology, behavior and (should you be into preliminary research) brain structure" then by all means, call me transsexual. However, currently, it means (or at least strongly connotes)"person who for some completely unknown reason has decided that they want to be the opposite sex and behaves accordingly". That's totally wrong (for me)-the important psychological male part of me has always been there alongside the horrible female parts. Therefore intersex actually makes sense when describing myself. And with the latter meaning, being transsexual also means that society thinks you're a deviant freak. Who wants that?
Having said that, the the label of intersex isn't so fabulous either. People misunderstand and stigmatize that as well-it's the whole paradigm of normality.
Maybe it would help if everyone realized that I'm no more a transsexual or intersexual than I'm a dark hair or a sixteen. People lose sight-I've lost sight-of the fact that I'm just another person.
